2018 Hali fishing update

Some great Halibut fishing memories for 2018. All of my fishing gear, which has I have used for a number of years with great success, is provided to me by Gibbs Delta tackle. When weather has been good, good tides have provided us with excellent halibut fishing. Bad weather has resulted in a number of fishing trip cancellations so far this year. Reduce size restriction for halibut has proved to be a real problem. As the season continues I anticipate more smaller fish being retained will result in more larger fish being caught and being released multiple times. I anticipate that the halibut catch ratio compared to last season will be down considerably this year given weather conditions etc. It would be prudent for DFO to step in and make and in season decision based on relevant information and increase the maximum size for retention. That would actually be managing the fishery, which is what they should be doing.
Salmon fishing has been decent. Although, with the size restrictions, area closures for killer whale food forging areas, and terrible weather for fishing, there has been little pressure on salmon. DFO has been very quiet about other forthcoming measures that will be taken to provide additional salmon for Southern resident killer whale food. But you can bet your bottom dollar, that it will definitely impact on our fishing area, Area 20 –5 and area 19 – 3. For some reason we have become they’re scratching post.
